We have been studying chemical reactions over the past month (many more posts to come on this!). On this particular experiment, we squirted red colored vinegar on a paper towel and put some coins on it. We expected the coins to turn a color where they were in contact with the paper towel but we were…. WRONG!
The TOP sides of the coins that were NOT in direct contact with the vinegar turned blue. The bottom sides looked slightly etched with the pattern of the paper towel, but that was it! After this experiment, we covered new coins in vinegar and left them for 24 hours. They were a little cleaner, but that was it. We determined that it was the combination of the vinegar and oxygen that created the patina. So cool right?!
