Trapezoids and Marshmallows

Our studies of fractals led us to the awesome trapezoid shape. With a giant bag of slightly stale marshmallows and a box of toothpicks, we got to work building 3 dimensional triangular fractals! The feeling of the still slightly squishy marshmallows was terrific and it was hard to stop building!

After a few days, the marshmallows got hard and strangely, started falling, slow motion from our suspended installation of the many that we created. Soon, they disassembled and we had to take them down. We had wished there was a time-lapse video of them coming apart! They broke in unexpected places.

This was a great way to see how fractals work in 3 dimensions. Next time you have a bag of marshmallows and some toothpicks, give it a try for yourself!
